I so would love to have an 8’x8′ patch of catnip, just to see our four cats living it up.
I’ve tried growing catnip before but never quite would take off, after our recent discovery, I’m wondering if the cats were getting to it before they could even bud!
This year we decided that instead of direct sowing the seeds in the ground, we’d just purchase a small plant at the local garden center.
Well, I stretched out the plant by pruning it back and re-planting the cut-offs. Re-planted it in a larger container giving it room to grow and as a precaution I placed a wire mesh over it. I’d been wondering why the catnip was not growing… and the answer was presented to me very clearly.
Misho, one of four cats has been resting on top of the mesh… this crushes down the mesh causing some of the leaves to bounce through when he gets off. None the less, he is quite comfortable just laying on top of the protected catnip.
So much for being able to harvest a few leaves for our tea… just a little aside here, for you garden lovers- catnip is in the mint family – and makes a great tea for calming nerves and aids with digestion.
Don’t blame the kitties… so much stress in the world. I’d love to rest on a bed of catnip too!
