Prague, Czech Republic. While browsing through facebook I came across a post on the astronomical clock of Prague – and I instantly traveled down memory lane and my visit to that lovely country. The Prague astronomical clock, installed in 1410. It is the world’s oldest astronomical clock still in operation.
No detail was missed when this clock was put together, the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky is elaborately detailed with precision of an outer ring of roman numerals from 1 – 24; this is followed by an inner ring of numbers which has numbers 1 -12 twice … to add up to 24. In this same section yet another circle displays the zodiac – and it methodically moves through the zodiac.
And just as the clock gets close to the hour toll… everyone gathers round to watch “The Walk of the Apostles”, a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures—notably a figure of Death–represented by a skeleton–) striking the time; shortly after the golden figure of a crowing rooster flaps its wings signaling – all is well.
