I was remembering the power of prayer. Several years ago an acquaintance had called me distraught with the pending foreclosure of her home. She had gone to the court hearing and the judge gave her 20 days to review her situation and present any findings- if no solution was provided they would be setting a sale date. Twenty days had gone by so fast, that was her deadline.
Earlier that week we had conference call with her lender who then sent her a qualification package requesting proof of income… truth was with the economy so bad her income had suffered – and the prospect of sustaining her home seemed grim; the mortgage payment they wanted at that very moment was not possible. What hope did she have? The lender’s attorney was callous.
I was feeling anguish in my heart for her; in my quiet desperation I remembered a dear lady, Brooke was her name, she had given me a little book back in 2006 titled The Prayer of Jabez it was somewhere in my book shelf. Small little book that could be read in a 2 hour sitting, I had only read the first 15 pages, and for some unknown reason I was being drawn to it after so many years.
Within the first few pages the book reveals the Prayer of Jabez and the rest of the book is the explanation of the prayer.
With the book in hand I took it to my bedside and read most of it, I vowed I’d read the rest before I got up in the morning. I pondered on the prayer and the meaning of the words. The explanation made sense to me.
The story of Jabez said that Jabez called on God saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.” So God granted him what he requested. ~ I Chronicles 4:10
With an open heart I prayed.
The early morning light gently filled the room with a special glow. I propped up an extra pillow I had to finish reading The Prayer of Jabez book.
After I finished reading the book I had a sense of accomplishment, I closed my eyes and in earnest and faith I prayed the words I learned from -I Chronicles 4:10. I decided that after I’d check my emails and had the morning coffee I’d call her. I opened up my emails and the first one was from her. She requested I review some documents she received from her lender. I read them through, I thought to myself… this is a miracle! She was approved for trial payments which she could afford without her even sending a package!?
Things were looking up. I picked up the phone and called her, she told me she had received those documents from her lender the day before and had two days to return the package with the trial payment; she just needed me to confirm that what she was seeing was true. She said that she pawned her jewelry and was able to come up with the exact amount needed. We cried on the phone tears of gratitude and joy. I told her about The Prayer of Jabez and she confirmed the miracle that had happened to her.
