I heard the word volunteer in relationship to gardening a while back.
A volunteer plant – volunteers grow ‘accidentally’ where the seed drops. The compost pile is usually the place where volunteer plants love to grow. The soil is rich and teeming with all the nutrients needed to grow vigorously.
We started growing tomatoes in the veggie patch late February – a volunteer tomato plant started to grow back in January before our last frost. We are simply marveled at how hardy and bountiful the plant is. It is growing at the edge of the back patio. A seed probably got swept off into the edge of the grass and bam! it took root.
What kind of tomato? Now that is the question. We suspect it to be a Campari tomato, when out of season- it’s the only kind of tomato George likes to eat. Mid size with a punch in aroma and flavor.
